Social Media Platform for Muslims Launches on July 18th (1st day of Ramadan)
Innovative site wants users of all religions and nationalities to interact in a ‘moral’ way -without sexually explicit content or any abusive language
LONDON, United KINGDOM (June 18th, 2015) – A social media platform that encourages its users to be respectful is launching today – which coincides with the first day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Muslimface is not just for Muslims- it is for anyone from any religion or background that wants to use social media in a moral way, while also asking the questions they need to (about Islam) from real Muslims.
Fresh off five months of beta testing among more than 1,000 global users with 99 percent positive feedback. Muslimface is available in several languages, including English, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, the Malaysian language Bahasa, Turkish, and Indonesian. Additional languages will be added to the platform.
Muslimface also helps Muslims to find places they need to practice their religion – whether in the villages of England or the jungles of Peru – Muslimface will aim to help users find the closest halal butcher or restaurant, or nearest mosque.
Muslimface.com combines a number of platforms- but in a culturally sensitive way. It promotes respect and sensitivity with family-friendly, socially-responsible content and promotions, and a focus on spiritual enlightenment.
Muslim entrepreneurs and site co-founders Shoaib Fadie and Rohail Amin M. Shoaib recognized the need for culturally sensitive and religious-appropriate communication after speaking to Muslims and realizing they found current social media sites too explicit.
Muslimface is an inclusive platform that wants to encourage debate and discussion in an inclusive and respectful setting. The site uses software to limit abusive messages and sexually explicit content.
Muslimface steers clear of overt sexual and anti-Muslim sentiment sometimes found on other social media platforms. Though its creators anticipate users worldwide, Muslimface is a members-only network, where members invite other members to participate via desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.
“We began developing Muslimface based on feedback from many Muslims who were members of other social networks, even as they were exposed to anti-Islamic and non-sharia compliant content, like sexual images, alcohol consumption and generally blasphemous sentiment,” Amin said. “They endured it primarily because they didn’t have another high-quality social platform option, and now Muslimface provides them with an alternative.”
As a family-friendly platform, Muslimface guarantees exciting and fun content that does not conflict with Islamic values. Some unique, Islamic-centric highlights of the social network include:
• Prayer Scheduling Tool – allows users to schedule their five mandatory prayers under Islam’s five pillars and set prayer alert messages as reminders. Muslimface’s search feature also allows users to find the nearest mosque and access mosque calendars.
• Friends and Family Feature — respectful of the cultural and gender norms of the Muslim community. The tool allows friends and family to share information in a private online network, allowing the addition of opposite gender friends only if they belong to a user’s Mahram list.
• Find a Spouse Feature – allows a potential bride and groom to select an elder member from their Mahram list to facilitate communication between the potential bride and groom. If they decide further interaction should occur, a group of all four users is created to share profiles and further information.
• Quranic Quotes – allows users to type a letter of the alphabet and get quotations beginning with that letter. The quotations then can be shared on the platform, further spreading the word of the Quran.
Other features that are sharia-compliant include:
• Spotlight – allows users to share family-friendly updates, news, videos and other information with friends and family.
• Places – allows users to find hotels, restaurants, attractions, mosques, coffee shops, malls and other sites. Users also can add places of special interest.
• Groups Pages and Events – allows users to follow people, including political and religious figures, and organizations.
“The use of social media has become the way people connect in their own communities and around the world,” Fadie said. “Muslimface brings an increasing number of Muslims together into networks that connect them with others who follow the culturally-sensitive and religious principles of the Islamic faith. While we respect different opinions, everything we do at Muslimface is within Islamic values.”
Referring to the growing popularity of social networking sites, Shoaib Fadie said: “There are currently more than 800 million Facebook users around the world, 300 million of whom are Muslims. This number is expected to increase by 100 percent in a few years”
Rohail said: 'As a Muslim, religion and business are not separable-whatever you do for business has to be in line with your religious principles and values. Part of our goal is also to provide a better picture of Islam to non-Muslims.'
Research shows Internet and social media use in Muslim countries like the UAE leading the way, with about 71 percent Internet penetration rate. Among the key target audiences of Muslimspace are: Muslim scholars, celebrities and businessmen, Muslim families and teen-age children, Muslin young adults 18-25, entrepreneurs and activists 25-35. In fact, research shows 62 percent of Muslims are under 30, and these trendsetters and example for future generations of Muslims are a primary target for Muslimface content.
Muslimface also provides solid networking opportunities for investors, entrepreneurs, customers and partners, with the potential to open a gateway to market Islamic goods and services worth a substantial US $6.7 trillion.
