The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science Delegation Meets Leading Global Scientists during American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting
Alya Al Mazroui: “The innovative research being carried out by many of the scientists we met could significantly compliment the original and creative ideas currently being explored through our program. We hope to receive even more high-quality submissions from the United States and beyond in our upcoming third cycle.”
Abu Dhabi-UAE: 26 December 2016: A delegation from the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) led by Alya Al Mazroui, Manager of the program has concluded a series of highly productive meetings with leading global researchers and scientists at the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) annual Fall Meeting held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
Held from December 12-17, the AGU Fall Meeting presented a valuable opportunity for the program delegation to connect with scientists, researchers and technologists specializing in a wide array of geophysical sciences. As the largest earth and space science meeting in the world, the AGU conference attracted more than 26,000 scientists, educators, students, and leaders from across the globe to discuss and share insights on the latest research, discoveries, trends, challenges and innovations in the field.
Speaking on their second participation at the AGU Fall Meeting, Alya Al Mazroui said: “We were honored to represent the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science in the United States and share our ideas and achievements with such a distinguished group of delegates. We believe that the innovative research being carried out by many of the scientists we met could significantly compliment the original and creative ideas currently being explored through our program. We very much welcome the interest in and support for the UAE initiative expressed by a large number of participants at the meeting. We hope to maintain this momentum and receive even more high-quality submissions from the United States and beyond in our upcoming third cycle. “
As part of the AGU meeting’s agenda, delegation member Sufian Farrah offered a presentation titled ‘Achieve a Better Understanding of Cloud and Precipitation Processes for the Promotion of Water Security in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions’, which highlighted the leading role of the United Arab Emirates as a hub for research and implementation of cloud seeding over more than 20 years of operations and experiments. In addition, Professor Volker Wulfmeyer, an awardee of the first cycle of the program, discussed the progress of his research project on land cover modification in the UAE, currently in its first year.
The program delegation also met with 18 researchers from 15 prestigious institutions including Yale University, Caltech, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the US National Science Foundation, Weather Modification Inc., the German Research Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. These meetings allowed all the participants the chance to explore theories and applications that could contribute to advance rain enhancement research and technologies. The delegation also discussed with researchers from all around the world the program’s objectives and requirements for participation in the third cycle that starts on January 17 2017.
Reflecting on the lengthy discussion with the program delegation, Patrick Sweeney, Chairman of the Board for Weather Modification Inc. said: “With the growing pressure on water resources, the need for new water security solutions is becoming more urgent today for agriculture, rivers, aquifers or hydroelectric power. The demand for solid rain enhancement technology is already surging, and no government is doing as much as the UAE today to improve the state of research, share the knowledge and boost scientific results in this field. I am confident strong cooperation from countries at the forefront of technology such as the UAE and innovation from globally recognized private companies like WMI can have tremendous implications in a near future”.
Speaking on the shared views between the Program and the German Research Foundation, Dr Max Voegler, Director of the North America Office of the Foundation said: “Our goal is to make Germany the best possible home for global research communities. As such, we welcome the UAE initiative to advance the research and implementation of rain enhancement technology in arid regions and beyond. We share a common mission to fund excellence in research and to promote knowledge creation'.
The AGU Fall Meeting concludes UAEREP’s international roadshows for the second cycle of the program. The event marked the culmination of a series of successful international research collaboration visits and event participations across 7 countries and 4 continents, which saw the program delegation meeting numerous scientists and representatives from top global institutions in order to build relationships and research collaborations and encourage submissions to the upcoming third cycle.
This next cycle will be launched following the program’s annual awards ceremony and the announcement of the new awardees of the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2017.
