InSinkErator contributes to UAE State of Energy Report for third consecutive year
Dubai 20 June 2017: InSinkErator, a business unit of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), the inventor and the world's largest manufacturer of food waste disposers for home and commercial use, has been included by the Ministry of Energy for the third consecutive year, in the 2017 UAE State of Energy Report. InSinkErator was recognized for this contribution during the Ministry of Energy’s annual iftar.
Engineers at InSinkErator have identified that a 10 watt LED lightbulb could be powered for 17 hours by one pound of food. The conclusion is that by putting food waste directly into a digester or using disposers to divert food waste from landfills to advanced wastewater treatment plants is not only environmentally responsible but also makes commercial sense. In a system where biogas is captured for energy and the bio-solid are beneficially reused, food disposal systems can present significant savings to municipalities. Dubai Municipality processes around 5,532 tonnes of waste per day, reusing around 10 percent of waste currently. In line with UAE National Plan, by 2020, 75 percent of the volume of waste is expected to be recycled.
Mohamed Karam, Senior Business Development Manager, InSinkErator Middle East and Africa said, “Food wastage and climate change can both be mitigated through sustainable practices. In today’s circular economy, it is important for consumers and industries to minimize waste right at the point of use and subsequently any waste that reaches landfills. With the UAE 2050 strategy adopting as much as 50 per cent of sources of power generation as green sources, innovation will play a huge role in how energy is produced.”
InSinkErator contributed to the report in the form of an editorial piece submitted by Mohamed Karam. Using InSinkErator’s food waste disposer, food waste can be used to create bio-solids or biogas as part of a holistic approach to waste management. When such recycled material is used as a power source, soil conditioner or fertilizer, the cycle begins again. Lowering domestic kitchen waste by approximately 35 per cent, the InSinkErator Food Waste Disposer is an environmentally responsible alternative to sending food waste to landfills.
