Khalifa University of Science and Technology Hosts Orientation for Newly-Enrolled Students
500 Students from More than 40 Countries Join Merged University that Offers Undergraduate and Graduate Programs across Three Campuses
Abu Dhabi-UAE: 22 August, 2017: The Khalifa University of Science and Technology, a research university dedicated to producing world leaders and critical thinkers in applied science and engineering, hosted its undergraduate student orientation for about 500 newly-enrolled undergraduate students at its Main Campus from 22-23 August. An orientation program for the University’s new graduate students will be held on 28 August.
Earlier this year, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), the Petroleum Institute (PI) and the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), merged into one university, Khalifa University of Science and Technology. The new university aims to provide the UAE with world-class academics and research needed to achieve the UAE’s knowledge economy transformation.
Dr. Tod Laursen, Interim President, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first class of the new Khalifa University of Science and Technology, an institution that builds upon the achievements of its predecessors to provide innovative academic and research programs across key sectors. Our new university expands upon the accomplishments of KUSTAR, MI, and PI, and creates greater opportunities for our students, and maximizes the impact for the future of the UAE.”
At the start of the fall semester on 27 August 2017, the Khalifa University of Science and Technology will have a total of about 3,500 students across its Bachelor's, Master’s and Doctoral programs, including 3,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The unified university offers 13 undergraduate, 22 Master’s level (21 MSc and 1 MA), and seven PhD programs. The University is open to both UAE Nationals and international students and the current student body represents over 40 nationalities.
Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Interim Executive Vice President, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, said: “We would like to welcome the new students to Khalifa University of Science and Technology, where we will provide them with world-class education and prepare them to be leaders in various industries so that they be part of the UAE’s journey to realizing its bright future. Whether through our state-of-the-art sports facilities, the new advanced labs or virtual classes, the students can experience what the University has to offer as we strive to provide them with a rich student life and an environment that encourages innovation, helping them achieve the level of excellence we expect from them.”
Additionally, the new term at the University includes approximately 60 students of its collaborative ‘Future Teachers’ initiative with the Ministry of Education. The initiative, which was launched in line with the UAE’s objectives to develop the next generation of skilled teachers to instruct students in state schools, provides scholarships to UAE Nationals and Arabic-speaking students of the University’s Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the newly added Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
The new academic term will also mark the launch of a new 135,000-square meter facility at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology’s Main Campus. With the addition of the new building, the combined university now boasts a total of 150 laboratories and 123 classrooms, as well as many internally- and externally-funded research centers that support and drive scientific innovations in strategic areas important to the UAE’s economic transformation.
Khalifa University of Science and Technology was established by the UAE leadership to accelerate interdisciplinary and collaborative research and development capabilities in the country’s priority high-tech sectors, in line with the National Innovation Strategy, UAE Vision 2021, and Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
