  • Leading Abu Dhabi dentist urges residents to follow simple steps to maintain dental hygiene and prevent bad breath while fasting
Abu Dhabi, 28 May 2018:   An Abu Dhabi dental practice is urging all patients to maintain oral hygiene while fasting during Ramadan and offering ten top tips to keep on top of oral health during the Holy Month.

Dr Nasser Fouda, Periodontist at Snö Dental Clinic, has been practicing in the region for over 25 years and has found that fasting during Ramadan can often lead to bad breath and other forms of poor oral hygiene, but can also lead to more serious issues if not managed correctly.

He revealed how oral care is often neglected in the month of Ramadan due to the change in daily routine and bedtime habits and has warned against this as it can increase possibilities of plaque build-up and other dental concerns.

He said: “Abstaining from consuming food and water while fasting causes dehydration which leads to bad breath. Following a few simple steps can help combat
bad breath, gum diseases and other challenges that often arise from poor oral hygiene practices during the month.

“Brushing and flossing your teeth after Iftar and Suhoor is the first step and I recommend all fasting patients to drink plenty of water during these meals as dehydration can cause bad breath. They should also eat fruits and vegetables and avoid spicy and salty foods as these can also cause dehydration.

He added: “People tend to eat a lot of sweets during this month. I warn patients against overindulging in sweets, desserts and sugary drinks as they can worsen existing dental problems.

“Patients also tend to put off dental treatment during Ramadan, which can make existing tooth cavities bigger. Many clinics, such as ours, are open late so patients can continue their treatment without it affecting their fast.”

Dr Nasser Fouda offers ten top tips for maintaining optimum oral hygiene during Ramadan: -
  1. Practice brushing and flossing your teeth after your meals at iftar and suhoor.
  2. Use a tongue scraper or a cleaner to get rid of the white residue that coats the tongue.
  3. People who use dentures should clean them with denture cleaning tablets dissolved in water and then wear during fasting hours.
  4. Try to avoid sticky foods, such as chocolate, some types of cereals and cheese.
  5. Drink a lot of water before and after fasting. Other hydrating fluids can also help.
  6. Recommend rinsing of mouth with water or mouthwash. If not comfortable with this practice, try using miswak sticks - the soft bristles on either end of the twig can be used to clean the teeth.
  7. Avoid dehydrating things such as caffeine and excess salt and reduce intake of sugar.
  8. Have fruits and boiled veggies at the time of breaking fast. They have high fiber content which will help in re-mineralize your teeth naturally.
  9. Incorporate usage of fluoridated toothpastes (1350ppm) twice daily because fluoride gives strength to teeth and prevents from demineralization or cavity formation.
  10. Remember to see your dentist and hygienist regularly and keep up the various practices they have advised you to follow.
