A recycling drive for students and residents of UAE is now open for participation. Launched by Isha Reddy, a senior year student, and the Deputy Head Girl of Dubai International Academy, the 10-day recycling drive aims to encourage UAE residents, especially students and young children, to take action for the environment from an early age.

Isha has recently founded Go Akhdar, an online platform with a mission to inspire and engage communities to adopt eco-friendly practices in their everyday lives. With the help of student volunteers and ambassadors, Go Akhdar plans to launch a variety of opportunities for people to take action through regular community-based initiatives. The 10-day recycling drive, from 5th-15th October 2020 is one such initiative, and she has taken a novel approach in making this drive completely safe and contactless.

“Due to the current pandemic and related safety regulations, many school students lack community service opportunities. While safety and social distancing should be everyone’s top priority, we shouldn’t forget our social and environmental responsibilities. I wanted to provide an opportunity for students to get involved in community service without having to compromise on their health and safety. Hence, I took a slightly different approach with this campaign. Unlike the traditional recycling drives, we will not be collecting waste and sending it to a recycling facility. This isn’t about how many kilos or who recycled the most, it’s about you and your personal commitment towards our environment. Hence, we urge you to take both action and responsibility at your end, to not only make this drive a success, but also help you embrace a circular lifestyle.”

Those who wish to participate, can register for the drive at  http://goakhdar.com/RecyclingDrive2020/. At the end of the drive, participants can send in a picture with their collected recyclable waste, before/while dropping it off at the nearest recycling bin or centre, to info@goakhdar.com,. Upon receiving the picture, Go Akhdar will award them a certificate of participation.

“I am so excited about this initiative! I really hope many students and parents get involved and show us how much they care for our environment. We all know that recycling is good for the environment, but many are still reluctant to make it an integral part of their daily lives. Through this 10-day drive, I want people to understand that recycling isn’t as daunting as it may seem., and in fact it is so easy and simple that one can quickly fall into the habit of segregating and recycling waste.”
