Moving towards a safer, more secure cyber space

Dubai, UAE – April 1, 2019:   Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC), announces its participation as the official government cyber security partner for the second consecutive year at the Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (GISEC), the largest annual information security event in the Middle East, which brings together cybersecurity experts from around the world. DESC will highlight the latest developments and practices in cybersecurity as well as initiatives geared at making Dubai’s cyber space the most secure in the world. The event will run for 3 days from 1-3 April 2019, located at Dubai World Trade Centre, Hall 7, stand A6.

DESC will exhibit a password interactive screen which is geared to discovering just how secure individuals are online by testing the strength of their passwords. Visitors will also receive tips on improving their password strength to enhance their online security.

“These days the volume of cyberattacks are getting more sophisticated and disruptive as they pose a great risk to the growth of the digital economy and smart infrastructures. Each year at GISEC, we outline the latest cyber security practices correlating these with emerging technologies, to scale up safety and, in turn establish trust to our cyberspace. Our main priority is to protect Dubai digitally against cyber threats by securing their privacy and data, and safeguard Dubai’s digital wealth,” noted Amer Sharaf, Director of Compliance, Support and Alliances at DESC.

The sophistication and frequency of cybercrime is on the rise: from disruption and loss of revenue at the enterprise level to data theft at the individual level, cyber-attacks have devastating consequences. One prediction  estimates cybercrime “will cost the world in excess of USD 6 trillion annually”. But awareness levels, too, are on the rise: the market for cyber security services in the Middle East is expected to grow to USD 22.14 billion by 2022, up from USD 11.38 billion in 2017, nearly doubling in the five-year span .

Sharaf added, “DESC is perpetually working to implement the Dubai Cyber Security Strategy. As Dubai is moving deeper into its digital transformation, we aim to create a society that is highly aware of risks and able to stay vigilant against cyber-attacks.”

Among the lineup of leading cyber experts, Dr. Marwan Al Zarouni, Director of Information Services at DESC, and a member of GISEC’s advisory board will be addressing attendees of GISEC main conference with an opening keynote on the first day of the event.
